Jonathan

On this day 31 years ago our first son, Jonathan was born. He only lived a matter of minutes. Even though I never held him while alive I look forward to holding him in heaven one day.

This is for him.

Jonathan

You were gone
before I ever held you,
quiet, still and cold.
My tears
were your christening.

No cry
pierced the stillness,
No life.
You were so cold.

Time suspended
in those moments
when we said hello
and goodbye.

I never imagined
so many years
would pass.
The day is still fresh in my heart.

The comes soon
when we shall overcome
that which separates
and eternity will be ours.

Meanwhile,
the angels keep you
while we await
our homecoming.

This is Love

I may not have posted anything here in a while, but I have kept busy writing. Here is one of the newest additions to the stack.

This is Love

Remind me
That every failure
Every stumble
Is making me
Into a reflection of You

When I’m on my face
You don’t name me
Disgrace
Or turn Your eyes
From me

I so often wander
From the safety of Your side
Unaware of hidden snares
But your eye never leaves me
Your arms ready to receive me
When I find my way back home

You do not judge
Even tho it’s Your right
Choosing to love me instead
Ignoring my unworthiness
You make me whole again
This is love.

Easter 2017

If you are one of the thirteen regular readers of this hot mess you know that I have expressed my hesitancy in writing about my faith many times. It's not that I'm ashamed or unappreciative...I'm certain that I'm not very good at it.

But that doesn't keep me from trying. He's the latest addition to the stack:

For Me

Beaten
Beyond recognition.
Hung naked,
Ridiculed and shamed.
This was the cost of love.

Nails tearing
into flesh,
Blood falling
to the ground,
Yet He spoke forgiveness.

Death and darkness,
A cold tomb.
The weight of
a separation
never before known.

Large stones and
the power of Rome
fall before the power
of the empty tomb.
Love lives!

Forgiveness required
so great a cost.
Willingly paid
by the Son of God
even if I'd been the only one.

Complacency

Complacency

What has become
Of your people?
Saltless salt,
Hidden lamps.
Playing games
With sin.

Your body broken,
Blood shed.
A greater love
Never seen before or since.
Treated as is
Common.

Sleeping giants
These self-satisfied saints,
Unmoved,
Frozen in their
Chosenness.
Powerless.

Stir us, Father,
Move me,
Smug and satisfied
I no longer want to be.
May Your heart

Be mine.

Grandchild

As some of you may be aware, Lyndra and I became grandparents last year. I never imagined what that would mean and can't really come up with words to describe the experience. We love our kids, all 5,385,613 of them....but there's something special about grandkids.

Thinking of my grandson, I wrote this today.

Grandchild

From the moment
I first saw you
My heart was yours

The tiniest of fingers
Toes and nose
I couldn't love you more

Tears flowed freely
From joy
A love like I've never known

But my joy
Is by sadness tempered
For I know what awaits

Wounds of flesh and heart
Broken hearts and second place
The things that make up life

If I could save you
From what's to come I would
But I can't

But I will love you
Through all those days
And more.

Here's the most recent addition to the stack.

Joseph's Contemplation

Tiny infant,
fragile form.
Hovered over
by a father
weary and worn.

Mother and Child
in the bliss of sleep,
leaving a father
a wondering
vigil to keep.

Angels and stars,
shepherds
and Kings.
A life so new yet
filled with wondrous things.

In the still of the night
and the quiet of his soul
Joseph wonders
about his role.

I have returned, who cares about popular demand!

Just a reminder that I make no claim as to the quality of these works. They represent a life lived from day to day.

Hope

I walk on,
Disregarding what
My senses tell me,
Believing that you are with me.

I choose not to hear
The skeptics and false Messiahs,.
Gospels of comfort and
Desire.
Your Word is the measuring line.

I hope,
Longing for the day
When this life is replaced
With genuine peace,
True joy and real love.
The day I see You.

I've Been Up to Mischief Again

It's been so long since I posted anything I couldn't remember my password! I guess I need to start posting again. When you live for a full year in an area with no reliable internet access you kinda get out of practice.

But anyway, I've been entertaining wicked little thoughts and thought I'd share them with you....LOL!

Top Ten Things That Will Spook You
10. You pass the same hitchhiker three times without having turned around.

9. While playing hide and seek in a graveyard you fall into an open grave.

8. You’re home alone when suddenly every dog in the neighborhood runs onto your porch, barking viciously.

7. You’re reading with the cat on your lap when a cold breeze passes over you, causing the cat to arch her back, hiss and run away.

6. Your walking through an empty church when you hear steps in the hallway...but there’s no bare floors.

5. Being awakened by the brush of your spouse’s hand when they come to bed only to roll over and discover they aren’t there.

4. You go to answer your home phone and the caller id says it’s your home phone that’s calling.

3. You’re in the shower when the bathroom door rattles...but you’re home alone.
2. You open the bedroom door to check

on your child and see the glowing eyes of your cat...except that you don’t own a cat.

1. You’re standing at the bathroom mirror shaving and poking at the cat with your feet...only to look over and see the cat on top of the toilet, staring at you with wide eyes.

A Tale of Two Fathers

I decided to come out of the woods today to share my thoughts about Father’s Day. You know Father’s Day, the day that is lost in the shuffle between Mother’s Day and the Fourth of July. The holiday that sees more neckties given as gifts than at any other time of the year (That’s a joke. I don’t think I’ve ever been given a tie as a Father’s Day gift, and I’ve got six kids!)  Father’s…the protector of good table manners, lovers of fine art, and those who would never teach a child how to “pull my finger.” Those are grandfather duties, and I’m looking forward to passing those lessons on to my new grandson.

Father’s day has always been a difficult day for me because I struggled for years with my own father. My father was a hard man, abusive to his wife and children, never holding a job for any real length of time, constantly moving the family and seemingly unconcerned about his children’s education, either in public school or church. My life with my father can be summed up in this statement:

He threw me out of his house on my sixteenth birthday.

If I stopped telling you my story here it wouldn’t be all that different from my father’s story. He too grew up under difficult circumstances. And it wouldn’t be too different from the story of so many others in our very troubled world.

But my story doesn’t end there.

Two weeks or so after my sixteenth birthday I found myself without a mother as well…it certainly seemed bleak. But that afternoon a car pulled into the driveway of my mother’s house and took me to a place that would become home.

My second home was the home of the family of AJ and  Shirley Munnerlyn. I had met the Munnerlyn’s through church. Their youngest son and I shared the same birthday, separated by only a year. AJ and Shirley decided that I  would come to live with them. Since that day they have treated me as one of their own and they treat my children as their grandchildren. They shepherded me with a firm, but loving hand and encouraged me to work hard and to believe in what God wanted me to be.

AJ is a quiet man, but there is and was no doubt about his leadership in his family or to the strength of his character. He showed me how a man loves his wife and family with love and respect, that discipline is necessary for success, and that love overcomes a myriad of shortcomings. AJ loved me when I didn’t even know if I could be loved and didn’t love myself. What I have become is in very large part due to his effort and influence. The proudest day of my life was the day that he told me that he was proud of me. I have spent the rest of my life trying to live up to, to be worthy of, that respect. He has become my dad.

Dad is in his eighties now and for the first time in my memory, he seems to be aging. But his spirit is still strong and his smile is still quick. I hope that he’s still proud of me and that I am a man like him when I grow up.

I love you dad.

Christmas Meditations

It seems no matter how much I want to post regularly to this blog I just can't get it done. It's not that I don't have source material....I've barely scratched the surface of all that I've written. I guess I' write more if I thought it was any good.

But I do appreciate the four of you who stop by to read these.

Today's post is from Christmas Eve 2013.

Mystery

I was lost in darkness
Knowing only despair
Alone and wounded
Battered by a world
That wanted only
To hurt me more

But God had other plans
He set out to save me
Worthless as I was
No price would be too great
To bring me home
Safe in his arms

The Son
Left glory and
Wonder beyond compare
He came to earth
To a man like me

Little child
Heaven’s King
Sleeping ‘neath the stars
A life to come
A cross to bear

A death to die for me.

Don't Be Afraid To Take The Next Step

We all struggle and yet we seem to be afraid to admit that struggle. I think we do no favors to ourselves and others when we cultivate an image of constant strength and victory. I tell my kids often that we are not defined by our victories but by our defeats.

One Step Follows Another

Elijah
Hid in a cave
And Jonah
Sat in the shade
And they both
Wondered what
You were up to

I must confess
I often wonder
Why things have
To be the way they are
For Your thoughts
Are beyond mine
And Your wisdom
Past my imagination

I’m glad
That my struggles
Are all known
To You
And my questions
Don’t scare You
Like they do me

I live my life
Not knowing
While wrestling
With the questions
Yet you
Wait for me
To seek You

For the answers

Back in the Saddle Again

After a long absence I have finally decided to come back to this blog. This piece comes from sometime in the last four years, but I cannot place it with any more certainty than that.

For what it's worth; here it is.

Growing Older

I once thought
I was wise
Now I know
Better

Our struggles
Define us
Our dreams
Propel our hopes

Love
Flees
Those who abuse
And comforts
The mourners

I hope I’m never
Half as smart
As I think

I am

Feeling Old

May has been a rough month....My oldest son graduated from nursing school. My oldest daughter got married and my twins each moved away from home for the summer. I certainly understand that those events are not all equal in importance or affect, but they were  biggies all the same.

I have been trying to write all month long...but the words and the emotions were a touch too raw. I was finally able to break through just a couple of days ago and this poem was the result. I am sure that there will be more to come...

and so here is the first.

Daddy’s and Daughters

I held you
In my arms
Blue eyes, blond curls
And laughter
We danced

You stood
On my feet
A smile
A mile wide
We danced

An open floor
Surrounded
By family and friends
In your wedding dress
We danced

The years
Took you away
Buy my heart
Holds you forever

And we dance.

I think I wrote this one after watching an episode of "The Twilight Zone." I'm not sure I could recommend reading it, but it's in the stack so it goes on here.....

Don't read if depressed...

Regression

Endless seas wash away
Timeless places.
Memories are haunted by
Loves never forgotten tears.

Meteors spreading in never-ending paths,
Clouds disappearing
But never to die.
Water’s reflections
Tell us no lies.
Man is a mortal thing
Always returning to his beginning –

Dust.

Did You notice I was away?

I've been away for a little bit....did you notice?

Gone But Not Forgotten

I saw you in my dreams.
Your smile undimmed,
No tears had yet
Crossed your cheeks,
Your eyes bright with life.

I wonder where you are now,
So many years gone by.
Has sorrow bowed you?
Does laughter still fill
Your heart?

I miss you
And what I felt
In your presence.
My hope is that
You still know joy,

That your heart still smiles.

Thinking About the Unthinkable

Sometimes as I watch others go through times of great struggle and loss I try to imagine what might be going through their hearts and minds. This is one of those moments.
Farewell

He stood alone
Having rushed the others away
It was time for him
To say goobye

She was taken
Away too soon
The battle all too brief
Leaving time only to grieve

Removing his coat
Casting aside the tie
The first shovel
Releasing his heartache

Sweat soon
Mixed with tears
And a man who never cried
Buried the best part of himself.

Not Good...But Kinda Funny

Ok...I admit it. This poem is NOT very good. But it is kinda funny and does accurately reflect my feelings during some of my classes...at every level of my education.

So, here it is...

Just Another Monday Class

Here I sit in class
With Dr. Jim.
It’s hard to stay awake
While listening to him.

Around the bush
We constantly beat.
But the rabbit we’ll never catch
In fact, it’s a dead heat

I’ve taken no notes
But wasted lots of paper,
Drawing many doodles
While he tells
Of another  caper.

I don’t want to say
Dr. Jim is a bore,
But what I’d really like to do
Is run screaming out the door.

Confessions of a Wounded Soul

Being a pastor is hard. I know that only a few of my colleagues would make that admission, but after more than 30 years in the ministry I'm not afraid to admit that. I love the church and have given my entire adult life to its nurture and growth. Unlike some, I have not and will never give up on the church...but I sometimes wonder if I have the strength to finish the course.

This week's offering from the stack reflect's this one man's struggle to stay the course.

A Servant’s Lament

When did my joy
Slip away?
Was it in the shuffling
Of papers,
The ringing of the phone?
Or the million minute details?

When did your voice
Get drowned out?
Was it in the caustic
Casual remarks?
Or the meeting after meeting
After meeting?

Where did I
Lose sight of you?
Was it in the hospital
Or the nursing home
Or the thousands of
Encouragement visits
With faithless flocks?

I love the church,
The body of Christ
But it demands a massive
Price
But that doesn’t matter
I love it so...
So I press on.

Hear my cry
Give me strength
Give me sight
Help me keep pressing

On through the night.
